Matty told me he had a “worm in his pants” this morning.

He has started to wear real undies and they were sitting funny.

This is well worth the read. Highlights points that I think we all know to be true but have never really done anything about. How to change the system I wonder….

Help…

We have nearly finished the book we that we have been using in our womens bible study. It was great as it continually referred back to the bible and questions were always based on a bible passage, however we found them to be mainly comprehension questions. Does anyone else have this problem? We appreciate these, but it would be good to have some questions that generate a bit more discussion and/or tie in related passages.

If anyone has any ideas of a book/study that is biblically based (not just “feel-good”) and the questions are more than basic comprehension we would really appreciate your suggestions. It is hard when you are trying to find a study to suit everyone and just glancing over them in the shop does not really give a good indication of what they will be like.

Thanks

…AND ANIMALS!

Is what Matty exclaimed as he looked at every page in his bible this morning. Well at least he has the basics down :-)

Matthias’ Funny Sayings September 19, 2006

“A whole bunch”- this is the latest, he says this a lot when he sees more than one thing or associates something with more than one eg ” I need a whole bunch of my nappies” or ” A whole bunch of toast” when there are four small quarters on his plate
“Just a little bit”- said with his fingers pinched and right up close to his squinting eyes
“yeah”-almost like a long-suffering sigh

“Maybe?”- long and drawn out hopeful question

“Don’t want to”- this is either said as a question or a statement, a question if he knows that there is the slightest chance of getting out of something and a statement when he knows that we probably wont budge from our position
“I can’t, mummy can!”- he wont try something unless he is sure that he will be able to do it. This is something that we are working on to make him realise that if you never try then you will never be able to do anything.

” Matty (or I) did it all by self!” – he will exclaim in surprise when he does something that he used to need help with all by himself.

“Why?”- Whining
“Just like the ….. do”- be that Wiggles, Hoolie Doolies, Daddy or Uncle Callum, he is very big on imitating people, but he will let you know who he is acting like, just in case you forget. And only he is able to act that way, so if he is being contrary then forget about singing a wiggle song with him because…

” No, Matty was, not you!”

” ‘member?”- He has a great memory and will bring the strangest things up that I had totally forgotten about and remember events in exact detail
” ‘member yesterday?”- any day before today
Yeah I think”- when you are convincing him to do something and he agrees

Finished! September 14, 2006

I finished my first quilt!!

My mum generously gave me the material and pattern so that like her, I might come to love making quilts. Well did the bug catch? Almost. I enjoyed the process and got an enormous amount of satisfaction upon completing it (if you know me you will know that I often start projects and then they lie uncompleted in a corner for a long time) I think that I would have liked making it more if I was making it with someone in mind, not just for myself. It was just a really simple pattern with mostly machine quilting but the point is that it is done! I now can’t wait to start another one, but this time I will make one for someone that I care about. Nicer than just doing it for yourself even if they never really appreciate the work that goes into it.

Keeping secrets… September 7, 2006

Can you keep a secret?
I don’t suppose you can.
You mustn’t laugh,
You musn’t cry,
But do the best you can.
(Old Childhood Rhyme)

I cried this morning as I finished reading The Bean Patch by Shirley Painter (winner, 2003 Dobbie Award for Women Writers). I have read many novels, some of them true stories but none have touched me as much as this. Normally when I read about someones life I can be detached and put the book down and return to my own reality. However I could not wait to finish this awful account just so that I could see how she confronts her past and moves on (at first I was reluctant to read this novel when I realised how heart wrenching it would be, I am glad I persevered) . Her life from birth has been a struggle and she invites the reader to share these truly heart breaking memories. Suffering physical, emotional and sexual abuse at the hands of her father and other family members ( so extreme that medical staff thought she was dead), this book is a collection of memories she had been told were dreams and how she came to acknowledge what happened in her secretive family. Shirley Painter was 83 when this book was published, it took her a long time to write and I am amazed that she was able to write about what she experienced. She is able to love and has a family of her own. What a terrible way to grow up. If you are sad I wouldn’t read this book and be warned, if you are happy it may make you sad. Despite this it is so beautifully and honestly written it is hard to put down.
